“Playing saxophone and accordion as well as vocalizing, Jessica Lurie wears many hats in this adventurous but melodic group.”
– Nate Chinen, New York Times

LONG HAUL is Jessica Lurie’s newest musical work, presenting nine original, genre-defying and ear expanding compositions. Her eighth CD as a bandleader, is it her first recording with her Ensemble in five years, backed up by a stellar band from both coasts of the US. There is the solid and dynamic rhythm section of Todd Sickafoose on bass and Allison Miller on drums; Brian Marsella shines on all things piano, including pump organ and Fender Rhodes; guitarist Mike Gamble gracefully supports Lurie’s interwoven melodies, and special guest Naomi Siegel lends harmony and punch on trombone. These compositions highlight a personal and musical evolution for Lurie, embracing new storylines and her diverse stylistic influences. Long Haul was co-produced by Lurie and bassist Todd Sickafoose, who has contributed his playing, engineering and production genius on other Lurie recordings (Licorice and Smoke, Shop of Wild Dreams, Megaphone Heart).

1. A Tiger for William Kentridge

4. 3 X Heather’s 17

Sandcatchers was formed by oud player and guitarist Yoshie Fruchter (Pitom, John Zorn) during his weekly gigs at Cheryl’s, a bustling soul food restaurant and neighborhood hang in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Along with Myk Freedman on lap steel, Michael Bates on double bass, and Tim Keiper on drums, Fruchter combines the Middle Eastern oud and Americana-infused lap steel to create a new sound inspired both by Arabic maqam and the Appalachian Trail. Called ‘a Middle Eastern pastoral Americana jamband’ by New York Music Daily, Sandcatchers’ What We Found Along the Way is a beautiful collaboration of sounds and souls, with original music by Fruchter and featuring special guest Erik Friedlander on cello.

Darshan is a groundbreaking collaboration between world-soul singer Basya Schechter (Pharaoh’s Daughter) and esoteric indie rapper ePRHYME (Eden Pearlstein). Pharaoh’s Daughter has been called “one of the most original and exciting groups in the Jewish Music Movement” by Rhythm Magazine and ePRHYME has been praised by Tiny Mix Tapes for his “consciousness-raising Jewish hip-hop.” Joined by an all-star cast of musicians (as well as a choir), the result is a kaleidoscopic fusion of Hip Hop, Rock, World, Soul, and Jewish music like you’ve never heard before. Darshan’s newest release, Raza, is a radical reimagining of the Kabbalat Shabbat service, the traditional prayers and mystical poetry recited on Friday night to welcome the Sabbath Bride. Seamlessly interweaving a dizzying array of influences and inspirations from East to West, Raza transforms this most beloved of Jewish liturgical rites into a genre-defying work of sacred pop art.

1. Animate My Anatomy
2. Let There Be Light
3. Sing a New Song
4. Arrives the Bride
5. Hapax Legomenon
