Fourth Dimension is percussionist/composer Brian Shankar Adler’s seventh record as a leader, and offers listeners an album jam-packed with arrestingly beautifully compositions rooted in Adler’s own spiritual upbringing in an ashram. Joined by some of New York’s top improvisers – Matt Moran, Jonathan Goldberger, Rob Jost, and Santiago Leibson – the group weaves through peaceful and radioactive terrain with ease and style.

In Fourth Dimension, Adler invokes an inner world and musical language where surreal landscapes and symmetrical structures are created using textless mantras, disintegrating drones, mind-bending polyrhythms, and encrypted messages.

Adler says of his early childhood memories: “I remember we would spend one month each year in silence. It was quite profound, because we started hearing the world in another way.” He continues: “After looking into the mind’s eye and becoming comfortable with what is brewing from within, the outside world appeared to be a reflection of that source.”

The sum of his experiences meld fearlessly into the subject matter that is Fourth Dimension. Here, Adler maps out new pathways, techniques and concepts, using the ensemble as a musical laboratory, exemplifying the search for balance. Sound/silence, stability/instability, form/freedom, human/machine are just some of the ways that Adler and the group toys with the push and pull of polar forces. In doing so, the music exposes, exploits, and raises questions about the infinite dance of this gravitational search. The album asks the listeners: “what resides in the subconscious and is it a mirror of the outside world?”

ŪROK is the brainchild of Croatian-born drummer and composer Marco Quarantotto. Now based in London, Quarantotto is an active member of city’s jazz, experimental and world music scenes, working with English musicians including Robert Mitchell, Julia Biel, Mornington Lockett and others as well as international artists including Erin Dickins (Manhattan Transfer) and Knoel Scott (Sun Ra Arkestra). Extending his reach far beyond the drumset into the world of composition and bandleading, Quarantotto pilots ŪROK through a blistering set of four original songs plus a beautiful interpretation of TV On The Radio’s ‘Blind.’ Drawing on avant-jazz, post noise rock and experimental music, Quarantotto and bandmates (Filippo Ferazzoli on guitar and effects and Luigi Casanova on bass) stretch these influences nearly to the breaking point. Recorded in a single live session, ŪROK bursts at the seams with the raw energy and power of a full throttle live show.

Gulgoleth is the brainchild of composer Sam Eastmond, leader of the eclectic jazz/rock/Radical Jewish Culture big band Spike Orchestra and frequent collaborator with musical mastermind John Zorn. The album features the engine room of the Spike Orchestra stripped back to a quartet setting to highlight the virtuosic skill of the players and this outrageous set of compositions. Drawing inspiration from the work of underground filmmaker Jack Smith and the process of creating arrangements of music from Zorn’s Masada songbook, this highly personal and intense album is a journey through a free-jazz, surf, rock, cartoon, Radical Jewish Culture and Downtown film noir dreamscape.

Following up on eXpanseplane’s Chant Records debut ‘Tranzjenik,’ ‘Deviate’ draws on the depth and breadth of electronic music as well as avant-garde jazz and classical music. Los Autonautas came together after a private concert in Argentina featuring New York-based musicians Daniele Germani (alto sax, originally from Italy) and Juan Chiavassa (drums, originally from Argentina) and Buenos Aires-based Lucas Goicochea (alto sax), Juan Bayon (bass), and Nathaniel Edelman (piano). From the first moment playing together, the chemistry among the musicians was so strong that they immediately decided to record an album to document their fortuitous meeting. The resulting album, Balcón India, includes compositions from each individual musician plus a classic by Sonny Rollins, but it’s really in the collective performance that the sparks really fly. Sometimes great music collaborations develop over many years, and sometimes, like in the case of Los Autonautas, they happen in an instant. Lucky for the musicians and listeners, the mics were hot and the tape (or its digital equivalent) was running when the magic happened. Members of Los Autonautas have worked with jazz luminaries including John Patitucci, Terence Blanchard, Kenny Werner, Bob Moses, Pablo Ziegler, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Dave Kikoski and Tim Berne.

A collaboration between flutist Robert Dick and guitarist Adam Caine, “The Damn Think” is a surprising, colorful and energetic sound world all its own. Weaving musical influences from jazz, classical, rock and world music, the duo engages the listener in a free-associative journey, bending both space and time in the process. Caine performs and records with musicians including Bob Lanzetti, Adam Lane, Billy Mintz, Daniel Carter and Kevin Shea. In addition, his compositions for video art have been featured in over 20 international festivals. Robert Dick is a flutist, composer, teacher and author. His musical style is a mix of classical, world music, electronic and jazz, and he is the inventor of the “glissando headjoint,” a custom flute head joint that allows the player to achieve electric guitar-like whammy bar effects with their instrument. In 2014, the National Flute Association awarded Dick its Lifetime Achievement Award. The New York Times said his “technical resources and imagination seem limitless” while JazzTimes called him “revolutionary.”
